Circle Training Camps
Round number two on the AMA National Enduro Series turned out to be a great improvement over the first round. I started off the race on minute 39 with my partner Randy Hawkins. Through out the 67 mile course was endless mud holes, down trees, extremely tight woods and creek crossings. The race had a little of everything and presented many challenges.
I started of the first four mile section pretty good, there was a few places were you had to use your head, maneuvering around the mud bogs with no mistakes in order to make it to the next check point on time. Team KTM's Russell Bobbit, Mike Lafferty and Shane Watts road that section with quick times as well and due to the short length of the trail it was hard to put any time or points on them.
Section two was filled with extremely tight woods, my knuckles and elbows came out bloody by the time I popped out of the woods. I felt very slow, there was 11 miles of tight stuff and every time I tried to charge hard I hit more trees! When I came in for my second restart of the day I was very frustrated, we made some changes to the bike and I was off to the next section and trying to move up in the results.
The third section was still a reminder of the last section, I was still getting a little frustrated with my performance and that was making it hard to find good lines choices on the course, but felt I improved a little over my previous section which boosted my confidence that I was still in the hunt.
In between the third and fourth section we had a long break and I got a chance to re-group with Randy and found out that I wasn't out of the chase like I had earlier thought.
The fourth section went awesome for me! Once again Randy fired me up and told me before I started the section, that he "owned" this section from the earlier days and that "I" needed to keep the fast time in the south. I knew what that meant and I went out and road perfect, everything went the way I planned it, going into the mud holes, tight sections and the overall trail layout. This section was definitely where the race started to go my way. I posted the fastest time in this section and did what Randy pumped me up to do.
The next section was a short 5 miles, and again, I rode perfect with no mistakes and nailed it with the fastest time! I gained a full point on all the competitors. I had finally found my rhythm and everything was clicking, I had one more chance to gain time and I was motivated to finish strong.
On the sixth and final section of the race I tried to carry the previous rhythm through the 7 mile trail. I was having a really good ride going, but towards the end of the section I made one mistake and fell down, loosing some time, but other than that I had no problems with line selection and mud holes. I had the second fastest time of the day in the section.
My last half of the race charge moved me up to second place overall in the results. And my first podium finish of the series! I learned a lot from the first race to the second and I hope to improve even more before the next race in Louisiana on March 16.
My teammate and riding partner Randy Hawkins had a slow start, but just like the Randy of old charged hard in the last 3 sections and was having top 5 times. He finished out the day a strong second place in the Vet A class.

At first, we went down to the gym to do some stuff, and I was thinking “I’ve been doing this longer than him. I don’t need to listen!” But then I thought hey, I’ll try it and see what happens, and if it doesn’t work I’ll go back to what I do. But it’s fun. Jason mixes it up.

I have trained and done a lot of different programs throughout my career. Jason has always impressed me with his dedication and hard work in the training field. Jason’s programs and training manual are professionally organized and make me feel totally prepared heading into any race I attend.

Training Tip of the Month
Since it is about to start the racing season again, I recommend focusing more effort on building you cardio, and laying off lifting weights as much. If you still want to lift weights, I suggest doing cardio weight circuits. Pick about 7-10 exercises (bench, pull-downs, rows, military press, etc) and move from station to station as quickly as possible to maintain a good heart rate. Do between 20-30 reps (light weight) per exercise and rep it out quickly. This method maintains your strength without bulking you up and builds your cardio too. In my experience if I lift heavy weight and low reps during the season it pumps me up, but using this method maintains my strength and keeps me loose.Quotes from Full Circle Athletes
